I supported one device on Kickstarter that has now closed and have been left with a brick because it needed their servers. I had a second product cancelled even though the company was owned by a major energy supplier.
I’ve recently bought a 2nd all-in-one. And just thought “could this happen here” & “have I just made a huge mistake”.
Obviously, we all hope Canary continues, but there is still a possibility of it closing and the servers disappearing. At least if there was a way of recording to a local device/NAS server the device wouldn’t be completely bricked.
I understand the security aspect, which is why I’d suggest only local access and possibly even restrict it to a canary certified app with the appropriate security certificate. Almost everyone has an old phone they could refashion into a data store if needed.
